Notes:

This is what Sam's Gap looked like "Back in the Day." Trips to the Nolichucky, Watauga, Russell Fork and points north were slower and more dangerous than they are with the new I-26 extension, but they were also more adventurous and scenic.  Quilts were sold at the side of the road, hung out for display on clotheslines and old tobacco barns.  Driving home one could stop for gas and enjoy the sweet sounds of homemade old timey music played by a group of neighbors sitting in a circle in the back of the store.  Yep, the early 1990's were something, weren't they? I was standing on the NC/TN line when I took this photo, looking down into TN.  The TN side of the gap was particularly treacherous, with several miles of steep switchbacks.
