Introduction

The calendars below describe the "whitewater releases" tentatively scheduled for the Upper Youghiogheny River below Deep Creek Dam in 2008.  Note that by passing your cursor over the colored calendar cells the release information will appear in a pop-up text window.  The standard release is 600cfs plus the natural flow already in the river.

Gage Information

The water reaches the put-in about 2 hours after the release;  the water at the put-in begins to fall about 1.25 hours after the release ends.  Don't linger on late afternoon runs:  the paddle out is long and flat . . . and that's with water!  The end of the bubble reaches Lost and Found -- the last major rapid -- about 3 hours after the release ends;  it reaches the take-out in Friendsville about an hour later.  Don't fall behind the bubble.

Notes

Scheduled releases occur from late April to mid October.  Here's a link to a verbal description of Deep Creek Hydro's scheduled releases.  Note that there may be an additional release Gauley Weekend (the third weekend of September).  Because the dam operators attempt to maintain the level of Deep Creek Lake within an upper and lower "operating rule band", unscheduled releases can occur after heavy rain and scheduled releases can be cancelled due to drought conditions.  Call Deep Creek Hydro at 315-413-2823 for the latest release information.  Note that the Upper Yough row on the boatingbeta.com MyFlows page displays current flow data resulting from both scheduled and unscheduled releases as well as beta on the boatability of those flows.
