Mystic Lands development on the Nantahala

Does any one have concerns about the developement along the upper 2-3 miles of the Nantahala? Yes. I know that land was for sale for many years and groups had an opportunity to look into buying it, but it is now sold and the purchaser has plans on putting 64 homes on less than 30 acres. They have blocked access to the water gauge (which was used by the public as an access to the river for over 20 years) and placed an obnoxious wall along a 1 mile stretch from Ferebee Bridge upriver. Where does AW or other paddling groups stand with their concerns about access as well as acting as a watchdog for water quality? Who is watching these people to make sure they are doing the right thing? I'd appreciate some dialog about this development.

: Carolyn,
Yes, I have heard concerns about this topic on boatertalk, the online discussion group for whitewater paddlers. Here is a link to a thread on the topic as well as the developer's web site:

I do not know what the latest is on this development. The feeling I got from reading these posts a month or so ago was that the Swain County health department may not issue septic permits on lots that small that close to the river. Whether or not that means the developer will try to apply for a package treatment plant to discharge waste into the Nanty I don't know. I would think this issue would be a concern to many WCP paddlers, so please post any news you get on here. Thanks

Site look funky?  Your browser is so old standards-based layouts and styling confuse it.  Consider updating.  Good options include:  Mozilla (Linux, Mac, Windows),  Mozilla Firefox (Linux, Mac, Windows),  Netscape v7 or higher (Linux, Mac, Windows),  Opera v7 or higher (Linux, Mac, Windows),  Galeon (Linux),  Konqueror (Linux),  Apple Safari (Mac),  Mozilla Camino (Mac),  Microsoft Internet Explorer v5 or higher (Mac),  Microsoft Internet Explorer v6 or higher (Windows).  All are free.  Because of security concerns I personally avoid Internet Explorer.  It may or may not be more buggy than its competitors, but its prominence and Microsoft's notoriety make it the most frequent target of malicious crackers.
