French Broad River - Tour de French Broad paddling trip

French Broad River - Tour de French Broad paddling trip

As part of promoting the French Broad River as a place to "live, work, and play", RiverLink is working to create the French Broad River Paddle Trail. But to build this incredible reacreational resource RiverLink needs your help!

Are you a French Broad River advocate? Paddling enthusiast? Love recreating outdoors? We invite you to join us to be a partner in this effort and attend a planning and informational meeting scheduled for 3:00pm on Tuesday, February 17th 2009 at the RiverLink offices located at 170 Lyman St., Asheville. Our vision is to make it feasible for people to launch a boat in Rosman, NC and paddle the 219 miles of river to Knoxville, TN, camping along the way, and having easy access points to get in and out of the river.

Currently there are very few camping locations and river access is often quite challenging. As a result, we hope to change this reality by working with local landowners, municipalities, the US Forest Service and others to set aside or allow access to a small portion of their river front property to allow for camping or river access sites.

Camp sites would be mostly primitive boat-in locations with a low impact design consisting of a small river access point and a small tent camping area approximately 50x50 feet alongside a floodplain. By using the floodplain, we utilize an area most landowners are not currently using. The sites will be maintained annually by Riverlink volunteers.

Points of discussion for the upcoming meeting include use of private and public land along the French Broad in Madison and Buncombe Counties, land easements and associated tax incentives, insurance and liability issues, land maintenance, and discussion of an upcoming Pigeon River Grant to help fund this project.

If you are interested in attending this meeting please RSVP to Palmyra Romeo, Assistant Riverkeeper at palmyra@riverlink.org.

Hope to see you there!

Site look funky?  Your browser is so old standards-based layouts and styling confuse it.  Consider updating.  Good options include:  Mozilla (Linux, Mac, Windows),  Mozilla Firefox (Linux, Mac, Windows),  Netscape v7 or higher (Linux, Mac, Windows),  Opera v7 or higher (Linux, Mac, Windows),  Galeon (Linux),  Konqueror (Linux),  Apple Safari (Mac),  Mozilla Camino (Mac),  Microsoft Internet Explorer v5 or higher (Mac),  Microsoft Internet Explorer v6 or higher (Windows).  All are free.  Because of security concerns I personally avoid Internet Explorer.  It may or may not be more buggy than its competitors, but its prominence and Microsoft's notoriety make it the most frequent target of malicious crackers.
